The Newest Illness??

Game Addiction. It has been talked about by many. But in Italy it has gone one step further. Doctor's at Italy's Lecce Hospital recently took in a 13 year old boy. Based on the symptoms of not being able to talk or understand anything going on around him, and some others, the doctors first thought he was suffering from a stroke or a severe brain disorder.

As time went on, the doctors discovered the 13 year old had just finished playing a marathon session on his new Playstation. Once the cause of the problem had been found, they doctors were able to treat the boy. The illness diagnosed, "Playstation Addiction".

My Thoughts

Wow. I think the kid took it a little too far. I don't see how the illness he came in with should be considered "Playstation Addiction". Especially if he just got it. The kid even told his father to get rid of the Playstation after he was treated. An addict doesn't usually give up the addiction that easily. I'm sorry he got sick, but you need to know when to take a break, and what your boundaries are. There are warnings about seizures, etc. So take heed they can happen. Moderation can be an element to think of as well. SO have fun, but remember your health comes first.

From what I understand, that boy is epileptic, and suffered a severe seizure that caused his condition. He doesn't have "Playstation Addiction"; He has Epilepsy.

Wow...x_x I have had my fair share of "Photosensitive Seizures" that game covers and manuals warn you about due to excessive gaming, but this is just wow...I would have the same effect if I watched TV, or seen some pretty lights. People are always so quick to jump up and blame video games. People who work in offices, and sit on computers can get them as well, one of the reasons why I had to leave me job.

Photosensitive seizures are NOT fun, by the way...I hate them very much, it also sucks being very good at getting them when I least expect it.

Addiction is a powerful thing. Weather it's game addiction, drugs, alcohol, food, shopping. Anyone else have that thing when your lying in bed almost asleep and all of a sudden you like jump up kinda like a weird reflex or something, lol.

I agree with you, this kid does sound like he has epilepsy!

GAAAH!!! EVERY TIME!

whenever there are video games near a problem, people blame the video games. EPILEPSY IS REALLY SERIOUS! if they knew about this, why did his parents let him play video games for so long? it sounds like bad parenting and a neurological disorder.

I thought doctors can't diagnose until they do further studies on the patient. As an experiment, there should be subject A, B and a Control. In this case, they should have tested him with Xbox if he has the exact same symptoms. With that they can tell what really is going on with him. Btw, I diagnosed myself with "PCA" - pixeled crack addiction. :(
