Gaming Experiences

So after reading the comments on Oh_Snaps blog I will answer a few things for people:
First off I will reply to one comment about whether this is a fake site.

NO this is not a fake site. All of the females here are genuine gamers. Raychul has gone to SEVERAL gaming conventions and has been featured in a gaming magazine article, she is also apart of Girl Gaming Network. Nikole is apart of TheGamerGirls.com and has helped host several of their weekly shows. Britini_Martini and I have both participated in several MLG tournaments for Halo 2. And ALL of us love video games, whether it is console, handhelds, PC or even playing games on the cell phone. We were all picked for the site for the simple reason that we love gaming. Some of us may not be part of huge female gaming communities that are constantly featured in articles by different sites and magazines but we are just as dedicated to gaming as anyone whether they are male or female.

Now another comment that intrigued me was asking about some of our experiences in being female in a male dominated community..this was also the main reason I started writing this blog lol. ANYWAY here is goes:

I have been gaming for over 15 almost 16 years of my life. The first people to get me into gaming were my cousins. At this point I was 5 years old and Mario Kart and Paper Boy turned into the loves of my life up until I met Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past and I was hooked for life. I never had any insane reactions about being a girl playing video games back then because all of my friends played GameBoy or had an NES, SuperNES or a Sega Genesis and they didn't care whether I was a girl or not. We were just a bunch of kids playing video games. As I got older and became more of a "Hardcore" gamer I started noticing people making such a huge deal whenever I would add remarks about a video game they were talking about. They would freak out and would say "YOU play video games??" I just had that questioning look on my face like ---DUH--- but I would blow it off. Then competitive gaming came into play along with Online gaming. This is where I noticed that the male community was split on the subject. You either ran into a guy online and they would say "OMG Your a girl?? You must be a fat ugly dyke who has no life and plays video games online to meet guys and date them because you are so ugly." or "Go to the kitchen and make me a sandwich" "Your a %$#%" and so forth. Then you would run into the guy that says "OMG Your a chick?? Can I have your phone number?" "OMG Do you have a boyfriend??" "Like OMFG I would rock your world" "I know you want to play with my joystick". You RARELY get the guys who want to be your friend simply because your a fellow gamer. Then you would run across the occasional female who would trash talk you, yes I am afraid to say that some females do that, these females are the ones I like to call "Attention Whores" --I really do hate labeling people but that is the best way to describe them-- these women want to be the only females that these gamer guys know. Whether these ladies have a self-esteem issue or what but they love getting the attention of these guys who think that they are the ONLY female playing. So when another female comes in they become really territorial and will trash talk just as bad. Sadly some girls to that whether they are gamers or not. In the beginning of my online play I didn't mind the trash talk that much...main thing I thought about was---Did his/her parents ever teach them manners? Would he/she talk to their mother like this?---it just surprised me because of how vulgar some of them were. Even 12 year old little boys would be bashing me calling me names. I'm like --where is your mother? and wtf are you doing playing an "M" rated game? Then when I got into the competitive gaming I was like HA talk trash to me now boys! Because no matter what these people say they won't say it to your face, they just hide behind their little microphones and their computers and when they actually meet you in person they just stand their shocked and don't say a word.

Here is the main point of my rant:
Whenever you guys say something vulgar to a female when you run across them online think about what your mother would say? Would she be proud that you were talking to a woman like that? Of course not. But aside from all the bashing I still love playing video games and no matter how much trash talking I get it won't stop me or any other female gamer from playing any type of video games.

If you have any other suggestions on stuff you would like to see on the site let us know! We would be more than happy to share some of our gaming experiences with you!
Also don't forget that if you have a question that you would like to ask the ladies of GameGirl please email thegamegirls@gamepro.com and your question could be chosen for next week!

i find whenever there is a girl in a game I'm playing most of the guys are like "what do you look like" stuff like that, totally trying to mack on the girl if she has a good voice. It's like what do you think she's going to be like "oh I like this guy I'm going to go find him in real life" or maybe thier just nerds that want an internet girlfriend. One time my friend was over with his girlfriend and she that Gears of War looked cool so I let her play it. 3 guys that you could tell were like 30 (she's 18 and told them this) started macking on her trying to get her myspace adress and stuff. It was wierd, creepy, and sad all at the whole time.

I for one think it is a good thing. The more girls or woman who play will make it more of a choice then having to follow society, which has made labeled video games a boy thing. I for one have seen guys who are addicted to WOW and totally flake on their girlfriends and also have seen how girls make guys choose games or her and it makes their relationship worse. With more co-op games coming out, if the situation is a BF/GF or just a group of friends hanging out, video games are a safe and fun way to bond. Multi-player may be to a bit to head to head, but with games like Halo 3 or Army of TWO giving you a chance to fight against something together. With my girlfriend playing by my side it gives us a unique way to see her good side when my girlfriend saves my ass in a bad situation and later returning the favor, those kisses with a smile on both your faces can make a typical night a great one.

When people arn't accountable for thier actions they will say and do stupid things, guys or girls. That's the internet for ya. The 2 categories you split guys into though probably only make up about 10% of the male population online, the majority really don't care they just wanna play the game and not chat.

OMFG I WOULD ROCK YOUR WORLD. Literally like the character from never ending story.

Society is one big sandbox, hopefully you dont get sand in your crack.

how did manage to be hot and love videogames at the same time??*this comment applies to all gamegirls*

i personally hate those ppl. . .30 years old & acting like 3?. . .but then, age doesnt determine intelligence. . .what kind of games do u ppl like?. . .

haha, I let a girl on my xbox live account to play Halo 2 once, and the next time I got on I had over 30 new "friends" and dozens of new messages including (I kid you not) love poems. Hilarious and scary at the same time.

Really?.... that sucks...

and that's kind of creepy, refering to gnomes post.

lol that is hilarious lol That happened with my boyfriends account to. When I went to his house one night I jumped onto his XBL account and the next day he asked me about all the friend requests lol I was like "I have NO idea..just random guys trying to add you thinking its me lol"

I have a little local video game store right next to me. At first I was like "Oh, great!" because I can just walk to it. But now I usually go to Target, because of the environment in that store. There's always a ton of guys in there, and when a girl walks in, they STARE. They drop what they're doing and watch you! Like they've never seen a girl before! Even the cashier is like O___O as I'm doing my shopping. It's the creepiest thing ever.

You know what why do u even care why not ignore the stupid comments and just get on with playing the damn game its not like your ever going to hear from those people again i mean just play the damn game and pwn those faggits

lol I do ignore them now but at the time that all that was happening its like...WOW...it doesn't bother me to much anymore because I just ignore it or mute them so blah lol

those guys w/ da friend requests r truly nerds who dont hav a life & cant get a girlfriend cuz all they do is spend 3-4 hours a day playing halo or da like. . .pathetic. . .by da way, break da steriotype, its interesting watching da paralizing effect it has on male players who cant think outside da xbox. . .its like da 1st time they hav seen a girl since all they c is men run around in ugly, batle scared armor. . .oh well, 2 evry1 his/her own. . .

I LOVE what you said about girls who talk shit. When I FIRST started going to competitions and stuff, the 5 girls that were already going to the events all hated me, because I guess I was intruding onto their "territory" and I was taking away some of their much needed attention apparently. Now I think girls are more open to other female gamers because they realize that the more girls the better. I dunno about other girls, but whenever I come across a guy who can't believe I game, it annoys me. Because I know there are SOO many other girls out there gaming and I'm not really that rare at all. I usually hate playing with girls tho... to tell the complete truth. but that's for other reasons...

this guy above me talking about patheticness... when every other word is "Da" cracks me up

hahaha
