Racism/immaturity on XBOX Live

Dec. 24 10:56 PM by Britini_Martini

Yes, I know what you're thinking. "It's Christmas Eve and you're writing about Racism on Xbox live?" I've actually spent Christmas Eve completely by myself not doing jack shit. I fly home (to Indiana) tomorrow morning. So I've spent my time surfing the web and came across one of my favoritist female gamer's videos. Her name is "TheBurntMatches" and she does video blogs all the time about video games. (You should subscribe to her cuz she's da bomb diggity)
In this particular video she discusses an ever growing problem in the XBOX live community. Racism and Immaturity. It is a response to one of Epileptic Gaming's recent videos. I agree with pretty much everything she says in this video so just go ahead and watch. I think that everyone should try to be apart of the solution. I know everyone has encountered this problem multiple times, or have even been apart of it. I must admit that I have in the past. She even touches a subject that I KNOW every female gamer has encountered on a daily basis on Xbox Live. enjoy
Check out Epileptic's video as well, cuz it's just as good.

The reason why I believe that we should all try to make this better is because video games are getting blamed for all kinds of shit every single day. Every school shooting, every corrupted child, every lazy child, kids who become violent or vulgar. Games are getting the blame for all of this. Unlike Cam, I do believe that parents are apart of the problem. When I sell Mature Rated games to parents, I always try to make sure that they understand that they are buying a mature rated game that is not exactly intended for children. Most of the time they just brush it off and just ignore what I'm saying. What they don't realize is that games are rated FOR A REASON. Because games are getting blamed for everything and the only person who can really prevent their kids from getting these games are the parents. Like Cam says... Some kids will lie. Some kids will get them somehow and play them anyways, but it's the parents duty to make sure that they know what their kids are doing. If the children are mad and don't understand why they can't play the games, then the parents need to sit them down and explain to them why they can't play it. If the child is mature enough to handle it, then that's a different story, but most kids aren't. Most of the racism and ridiculousness I hear on xbox live, usually comes from kids who are underage and who shouldn't even be playing the games to begin with. Kids are SO easily influenced by what they hear and see.

The XBOX live community seems to be getting worse and worse, and I know that everyone sees it. The only way to make it better is to actually report people. We also just need to be more mature ourselves. Talking shit is one thing... but just being all out assholes is something else. For example... I had a bunch of (NON GAMER) friends over last night and I was playing some UNO with them. We were all on vision camera just messin around and some little 14 year old came in the room and immediately started calling my friend a "fat bastard" and going on and on for no reason about my friend. It was ridiculous. That's just one specific occasion, but I see this stuff every single day. I even have videos of a racist little bastard talking shit on my youtube account. Kids like that shouldn't even be allowed to own an Xbox. Let's all just try to make xbox live just a little bit of a better community.

happy holidays :)

xbox live. . .well, any where were people can talk or type. . .is and will always be full of this sort of shit. . .cant help it. . .its like bots. . .they just keep coming. . .even if in small amounts, but they keep showing up. . .sadly, there will always be racism. . .oh well .. . .

holy shit ... she is bomb diggity =)

pretty interesting videos. I agree with Britni that parents need to man up and take the responsibility, and that most of this is by little kids. It shouldn't all fall on em though. I know i talk mad shit on live sometimes but lately ive just gotten in a habit of turning my mic off so no one hears it. I think we as the mature majority should just ignore the kids. They do it to try and fit in and get laughs, if no one laughs they'll feel like idiots. Even saying 'shut up' or being polite gives them plenty of fuel. However sadly i feel her video won't solve anything or cause a big movement, like she said, this shits been going on since CounterStrike(maybe thats why im so used to it). Very good blog though.

People today aren't willing to take responsibility for their actions or if they have children, they won't discipline them for fear of retribution from the government getting involved do to someone claiming child abuse. So what do parents do, because talking won't do the trick and parents can no longer spank their kids do to the aforementioned. The rights of parents are being slowly stripped away.

Talking goes alot longer than you think. If you treat kids like real people, and explain things in a way that isnt above thier heads or demeaning towards them, they will listen. Rights are not being stripped away from parents at all. Thats one of the excuses parents try to use when thier kids act like idiots

much props to Brit for posting such an interesting topic..

The internet exposes the true nature of most people in america today.
The sad truth is that most people in america are racist and/or sexist. They are raised racist and will raise their children racist. I can't play online for one day without listening to someone shouting racist and/or sexist comments on xbox live. It's not like you can just shout racial & sexist slurs in the street (like in the 1930's) but on the internet people show their true nature: racism & sexism. All that racism and sexism that is bottled up in the real world is released on the internet. I DO blame the parents for raising racist little viruses. My wife and I like to call them the breeders. Let's face it, most of the people that breed alot are simple minded folks that actually believe that people of color and women are not equal. I see it at my job all the time, White males expressing their very racist and sexist views, but as soon as someone of color (or a female) walks in, they switch their racist/sexist button off and they turn into nice liberals that beleive everybody should have equal rights. I live in NYC and came from Chicago. Both are major cities with very diverse cultures and people from all over the world. I hear racism & sexism all the time in both cities. I can't imagine how bad it must be anytown in buthole alabama. The only solution to stop racist and sexist remarks on xbox live is to have someone from microsoft listening all the time (yes, big brother). But that is not going to happen, too expensive and microsoft would have to ban %70 of it's members.

I think that it has to do with which xbox live zone you are in. I'm in recreation, and I hardly run into this type of stuff at all. Most of the really bad trash talkers are in pro and underground zones.

it's the web so people say nasty stuff without fear of retaliation.

It's anonymity that is really to blame here, or rather anonymity coupled with a lack of real order built into the XBOX Live system. In other words, allowing people to hop online without fear of retaliation breeds flaming. This is why comment rating systems are now being implemented so successfully on many of the video game blogs out there, to give power to those that don't wish to be insulted. If you added weight behind the rating system in online gaming -- where, for instance, a person would be able to see how many black marks a person has on their account -- then you'd have some order in the XBOX chaos. It would be wonderful to log in and have those that have been reported/voted down be stuck playing in their own damn lobby, stuck abusing each other. That way those who are respectful can play without having to deal with the lower life forms.

And for those of you who never got it, this is why Nintendo has to force friend codes down everyone's throat. Also why there is no voice chat right now with it.

i agree whole heartedly with vongaurd

She touched upon something that I think is worse than the offensive language, and everyone needs to realize it's not a matter of being racist, it's intolerant and downright midevil behavior. Sure it's racism, but it's also sexism. Sure you hear you ridiculous jokes about mexicans, Chinese or blacks, but you hear more often jokes about gays and women. That's even worse.

And she was wrong. The parents are to blame. The ESRB is the easiest, let me stress that word, EASIEST rating system in every single entertainment medium. It basically tells you, "This game is for Everyone/Teens/Early Childhood/Mature gamers!" It's so fucking simple! If the parents can't take the time to look for a couple of seconds, they're bad parents. Simply put.

Then again, none of this would matter if we had a more tolerant society who can accept and give these comments as what they should be...jokes, and only jokes.

And personally I take the Hey Arnold defense, and make fun of myself on Xbox Live (don't hit me, I'll hit me, I'M CRAZY!). Nobody can really say anything to me.

Cool video. Plus I think her raspy voice is kinda sexy.

i think it's sexy too :)

I have to admit, I agree, very sexy.

u know what would help to make it better? making a squelch button for each individual person... so if one person is being an ass you can squeltch him and still listen to those who are actually trying to play... again this will only help... it will not solve the problem by any means..

ummm... you mean the mute button?

I agree that the racism on Xbox Live needs to be addressed by Microsoft in some way. I have a friend who plays the game Skate on Xbox Live. We're black guys and he has already been the subject of racism on Xbox Live and he has only owned his Xbox 360 for about a week. He's been told things like "ni****s don't skate" and "what's a ni***r doing playing skate". I don"t know if there is a way for MS to monitor this, but something needs to be done. If I buy an Xbox 360 , I should be able to enjoy all of the features, including online voice chat without some idiot spouting off racist slurs.

I think its extremely unfortunate a lot of video games are ruined for people such as this. I'd like to think that our generation will be the one to change this, as we understand video games while our parents for the most part are uninformed about these issues.

When this generation has children of their own, I'm hoping that we, being the first generation where video games are so mainstream, will have a very active part in our children's entertainment. This doesn't mean shoving shit down their throat all the time and being controlling, but rather censoring certain things until they hit the appropriate age. Truth be told, some things should NOT be seen until a later age, because the significance may be over the head of the younger individual who partakes in watching or listening to said material, and can as a result be skewed in a way that makes it "ok" for the kid to replicate in every day life. This would include racism, sexism and general discrimination encountered on Xbox Live, PS Network or any other online community.

An example that comes to mind would be (and I'm sorry to offend anyone, this is of course a touchy issue with a lot of people and some people are more mature about it than others, merely trying to prove a point) sex at a young age. I know when I was younger (I'm 20 right now, I'm talking when i was in Junior High, as in grades 7-9) it was generally frowned upon to have sex at such a young age because you don't really know its significance yet, it doesn't mean as much. If however, parents informed their children about the significance, taking an active part in the child's life, then perhaps it wouldn't be the issue it has grown into. Same concept applies to video games.

There's a reason why there's a label on these "adult" materials, and video games are no exception. To end off this rant, I go back to my previous point, saying hopefully our generation will be the one to stop this abuse on the internet through being active in our children's lives, for those of us lucky enough to have them.

that chick is awesome and i want to meet her!

I really liked what Burnt Matches had to say about the only thing that can fix the Xbox Live Community. It has to be the community that fixes itself.

Reporting it is definitely the way to go. Let people know that that is unacceptible. Anyone acting so out of line should feel ostricized by the community.

In addition, if Xbox Live could come up with a way to allow gamers to only interact/game with people with a minimum rating (determined by each user) then the lowered ratings would really have an effect, a consequence. Assholes would quickly find themselves without an audience. For example, I could change my setting to include only players with a minimum 3 stars. any less, and it won't put me in the same game, also, if I'm in a game, they would not be allowed.

LOL @ "mute button"

The only decent response to this topic was posted by mandifesto. Rather than reiterate what is being called a problem, he, at least, attempts to provide a solution.

That aside, I think this issue should be looked at with some historical prospective. In the past racism lead to unfair treatment and violence toward its victims, hence, it was a problem. What people fail to see is that the racism being described in gaming doesn't lead to this. Everyone has an equal right to play the game and no one is being physically hurt or treated unjustly.

What little problem this is can be fixed by simply keeping an open mind - and no, I am not some kind of Buddhist (they keep open minds right?). Bored gamers say offensive things to get a rise out of someone - things they would never say in person (anonymity). How can you let a someone so weak that they have to hide behind the internet in order to put you down, offend you. If someone says something racist or sexist to you, getting your feelings hurt will only fuel their fire. You know you aren't inadequate because of your gender or your race, do you not?

Fuck the parents, fuck the schools, think for yourself. Fuck anyone who tries to talk shit to you. You're better than them..think about it.

How are you going to let the efforts of comedians like Richard Pryor and Dave Chappelle go to waste. Slurs like Ni**er are laughable at this point. There are little white kids saying it that probably don't even know what it means - Ni**a this Ni**a that, it shouldn't be offensive anymore.

Bottom line, no one is getting hurt, there are more important things to complain about in the world today. Dare I say QQ more?

Oh, and how do I change my picture?

For the majority of these people it has nothing to do with racism or sexism. They are entertained by offending other people. It just so happends that due to much descrimination against both races and sexes in the past, those put downs become the most popular; they are the most effective. *slogan* Don't let the offence do its job, and you always come out a winner *cheesy smile* *wink* *finger point*
