Dead Space's Preview

For those gamer who refuse to play anything by EA, they'll be missing out this year. Mirror's Edge, Spore, Battlefield: Bad Company, Warhammer Online, and now Dead Space are just a few of the games in EA's game lineup this year (I don't ever count sports games).

Dead Space is a science fiction third-person survival horror shooter. The game is influenced by games such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill, but what sets this game apart from other games in this genre is the fact that it all takes place in zero-gravity space.Much like Resident Evil 4, the camera works over-the-shoulder.
Coming to the PS3, 360, and PC Halloween this year -- it won't leave any gamer hanging.

The story is based around a character named Isaac Clarke, a space engineer who is employeed by Concordance Extraction Corporation or C.E.C (a company that works throughout the galaxy mining planets and such). The plot starts when Clarke's company comes across a distress call from the USG Ishimura (a "Planet Cracker" ship, that finds dead planets and extracts valuable ore while destroying the planet). Clarke first believes it's just a ship failure and travels to meet with the ship with two other characters, Zack Hammond and Kendra Daniels. Once boarding the ship, the team realizes the ship is crawling with a vicious alien race. The team becomes separated, and it's up to Clarke to take out the alien race.

The aliens inhabit the human body (That's what happend to the crew of the USG Ishimura). These once human creatures are mutated and after you. The only real way to kill the aliens is to dismember them, but you have to be skillful in how you do it -- for they can still attack without arms, legs, and even heads. You get into situations with these aliens where your weapon might not be the answer to kill them, and you have to interact with your enviornment in order to get out alive.

Remeber the fact that you are just an an engineer and not Rambo. You're not bulked up with weapons and the weapons you do have are mainly ment for mining. The Executive Producer Glen Schofield said, "The weapons are pretty unique and are really based on mining tools. There is a HUD but it's in real time and in-game- its actually part of the main character's suit. It affects ammo and weapons in similar fashions as other survival horror games except that you can't pause the HUD in the middle of a fight, take a deep breath and health and ammo up. You need to think ahead and plan things out or you could end up in trouble. It adds to the tension that's for sure."
You have weapons such as Plasma Cutter, which will do the job in dismembering some of the aliens. Stasis Guns actually slow the movement down of things you target it at.

You can view the newest trailer here or here. There's different one below.

If you find yourself more interested in this game, there's a trailer on the actual Dead Space website (http://www.deadspace.ea.com), that I wasn't able to find anywhere else -- which adds a little more thrill to the game.

They really wanted to make this game scary and sound is a huge part of the game. In areas where you're killing the aliens in a airless vacuum, you won't be able to hear the screams. It is in space, remember? Schofield addressed this, "We are really going over the top in experimenting with and without audio. Audio is such a key component to any horror game or movie. Try this; turn off the sound on a horror movie and watch a scary scene, its usually not scary. Then turn off the picture and just listen to the audio, its usually still pretty damn disturbing. We did this a lot."

I'm going to be broke after all these games come out this year...

"God moves in mysterious ways.."

I've used a plasma torch at work and it's amazing to see it slice through metal like warm butter. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what affect it has on alien flesh, hah!

I wonder if the creatures are aliens, demons, or angels. "God moves in mysterious ways.." that's some F#$#up stuff.

They are aliens, for a fact.

I think they ment by the aliens taking over the crews bodies. People they once knew... are trying to kill them.

Resident Evil much?

i look forward to this, Silent Hill 5 and that DLC Siren. RE isnt scary or creepy anymore. its more of an action game now. i think capcom should make a new mansion/ woods area and brig the RE series back to its roots but keep the aiming setup they got from RE4

you had me at the game is influenced by RE....

It sounds more like the flood...

The pictures I posted with this article don't really do it justice. You really have to watch the trailer to appreicate it.

Damn, this game looks sick. My friends and I have been watching it for a while now. I'm pumped.

Despite it completely ripping off Resident Evil 4 in terms of gameplay and how gruesome your character can die, I can't wait to play it.

I just think playing in zero g's would be pretty sweet..

That suit they wear reminds me of a Big Daddy but not so big. Maybe a medium daddy.

Why do i keep thinking of bioshock hmm i'll make sure i look out for this game
