This is a video by Daniel Floyd. He is a professor at Savannah College of Art and Design. He is also an avid gamer, and one who sees how this growing industry approaches sex. Sex in video games have always been a hot topic issue, but Floyd's argument is that there isn't enough of it. He wants sex to be used artistically, creativly and most important: in a mature manner. That's not to say Dead of Alive Xtreme Volleyball wasn't an amazing game.
< br/> I agree with him. In order for video games to be looked on as more than a toy for children, game developers will need to incorporate adult themes in a more mature way. Games in no way 'need' sex but, like he states in the video, if a video game dictates an intimate scene then go with it. Video games are an art form, and it's time they are given the respect and creative liberties that go along with that title.
Do you think having more sex, even if done tastefully, in games will hurt the industry or the way games are perceived?
Do you think video games are an art form that should be given the same protection as other forms of art?

well if it goes along with the storyline why not, i mean what was wrong with mass effects semi sex scene its not like Jack Thomspon can say now that we have seen sex in a video game we will go out and fuck everything?
Sex sells, it's a given. There is a warning label saying that it has sex content. It's like a surgeon's warning label with smoking. Don't buy it if you're going to whine about it later. I don't believe it will hurt the gaming industry because people are drawn to sexual content whether or not they want to admit it. There are many movies, ads, and whatnot that depic sex so I don't see why people should make a big fuss about it in video games. Bottom line, if you don't want your children to be exposed to it then don't buy it. It's rated MA for a reason.
Games will never be treated the same way as film is until they allow themselves to rise up to film's level. Sure, GTAIV was a blast, and we all loves us some DOA, but where's the 'Fatal Attraction' of gaming? I haven't seen it yet.
I think the biggest mistake the gaming industry made was the ESRB ratings. Hear me out. I'm not saying the ESRB is a BAD thing. Quite the contrary, we need a ratings system. But the second they decided to use different ratings for games than they do for films, it became a hassle. It's unfortunate, but the fact remains that a lot of parents today don't know wtf 'M for Mature' means.
However, I guarantee you that every parent in the United States knows what 'R-rated' or 'NC-17' means. If we rated games with the same rating for the same criteria as film, that's one step closer to elevating the medium. Mortal Kombat is 'R', and The Guy Game is 'NC-17'. Done and done.
im listening to "This Ain't Sex" off of Ushers new cd? i like it so far? i agree w/ him on everything minus the Ao rating. ThrillKill gat an Ao rating and THAT didnt have extreme sexual content i dont think. it just has an enormous amount of violence. a movie where sex helped move the story....Monster Ball. games SHOULD be treated fair like other art forms, but older ppl, politicians will never let this happen. as BAD as this sounds, maybe we (our generation of gamers) can make this change when all of the older ppl die. there wont be much stopping us @ that point.
and in all honesty, i think that "sex sells" needs to be taken away as part of gaming b/c it really doesnt. aside from DOA (which i believe it sells b/c its a great fighter), theres really no other legit games u can say sold ONLY b/c of sex. Soul Calibur sells b/c its a great game. GTA sold b/c its a great game. ALL FF games of the main series sell b/c they are GREAT GAMES (i could be wrong, but every FF game of the main series has some form of sexual interaction/ relationship). i think ppl dont give younger gamers enough credit for why they chose to buy certain games. when Concurs Bad Fer Day first came out on N64, i wanted it b/c it got great reviews from gamepro and it looked really fun/ funny, not b/c u could bounce on a sunflower girls boobs and make her giggle. the great mighty poo might have been THE funniest boss iv ever played in any game. peeing on ppl to death was funny too. everything about that game was funny imo. when i make the choice to buy FF games from the main series, i dont buy them for the love scenes, i buy them b/c of the story and just the sheer greatness of each game.
I think this "video games are art" sh*t it lame as hell. We don't need sex and other "artistic" sh*t in our games. I don't look at a damn game like it's a piece of art, I play the damn thing.
Having that sh*t in games doesn't make them play better, so it doesn't belong. It's just a pointless and un-needed gimmick. Keep games about the gameplay, and toss all everything that ads nothing to how the games plays, and in that sense, sex and nudity don't belong in games.
Hey Raychul nice pic in the new GamePro mag...
okay if ur young and cant buy a mature game than tell ur parents, mom or dad look at me will it ever look like I will have sex or will I ever do drugs etc.. etc....
Luv the vid...
thanks for shareing it Nickole
Awesome...and like the video industry, there should be an Adult game section...Yeah for digital boobies :)
wow, a poignant, funny, concise, and entertaining lecture on sex in videogames. Bravo.
I agree with everything in the video but it might be hard for some people to take it seriously when he makes himself sound like someone who sucked down 20 helium balloons. He talks about how alot of people think that video games are meant for kids and using the Alvin and the chipmunks voiceover prob won't help. We're the chipmunks
Coming on stronger than ever before
We're the chipmunks
Alvin, Simon, Theodore!!!
Most people just watch movies to watch them and listen to songs to listen to them... That doesn't mean they can't be considered art.
Personally, I think anything that will broaden game play experiences - such as genuinely mature content instead of gratuitous violence and sex - is a good thing. Right now we tend to have all the big blockbuster type of games - which are good, mindless fun - but not a lot of successful "indie" games that really give you something to think about.
If there is a demand (market) for games with sex in them, I really don't see the issue.. As long as those games are labeled with an AO rating. If they have a market for bloody games, games with excessive violence, etc., etc. Why are people trying to script the rights of gamers? If you don't like it don't play the game, if you don't want your children playing it.. Don't buy it for them, or allow them to have it at home. The rest is complicated if a child's friend has it, then you should be aware of who your child's associates anyway. What about the freedom to GAME?!?!! guess, it went out the window.
To answer the questions though..
I don't believe that sex in games will tarnish the image a game or gamers. It's just like any other issue, there are good and bad things relative.
It could be a form of art because it's someone's creation. Someone had a vision of what the game is going to be. A city in their mind they put together, characters who would bring life to the city. Maybe not to everyone, but that could be art to somebody.
i haven't a problem with sex in games, but at least lets not kid ourselves. It isn't art, and it more than likely wouldn't be tasteful either. Games sell to a large demographic of people who are stereotyped to not have sex... ever. Hence why you can't pick up an MMORPG without having to look at the elven girl's large double Ds on the cover of the box. Any sex, nudity, etc is put in for sex's sake... showing something sexual and arousing to an audience who are again, stereotyped to being virgins. Its another ploy by the gaming market to sell titles.
That being said, I'm not against it. Hell, I wouldnt mind graphic, raunchy sex scenes in the Sims games lol. But I know it isnt art, and if you take any plot and remove the sex from it, you have the same plot (unless its a porno) so it really isnt going to make anything more creative either. It's not going to add anything to the story, any depth to the characters, it will just serve as another outlet for the demographic.
I agree with what he said, but he shouldnt have tried to glorify it with words like art and creativity. Sex is sex.
The video has been removed by the user. :( Anywhere else it can be found?
Ok, this guy's my husband and I can assure you he is not a Professor at SCAD - he's just finished his second quarter in their MFA Animation program. We have no idea where this "professor" thing is coming from.
The video was removed yesterday because, while he had credited his research sources in the video's description, he failed to credit them in his presentation itself. SO, the new and improved video is up again. You can find it at this url:

or by searching for "Video Games and Sex" on YouTube.
We're both shocked that this has gotten such a response, so thank you all for watching!

I actually found this on Youtube and so I posted it over on GEN too. Very interesting discussions going on about its content. Feel free to grab the new video from the story we posted. I think I have the most recent version. Also, Carrie, tell your husband he is a genius and we LOVE what he did. I hope to see more videos like this in the future!
It isn't even just the industry either. The community is very split when it comes to sexuality. For example, A girl is a gamer and poses with a controller in a sexy manner. This is bad. However, a character in a video game has her boobs spilling out and a Barbie doll figure. This is good. It's just an interesting dynamic.
Anyhow, feel free to check out some of the discussions on GEN. I will make sure to let our readers know to check out what is going on here as well!
