DS Colors! Portable Paint for the Nintendo DS

Jun. 6 10:02 AM by Navie

DS Colors! is a free, downloadable program for the Nintendo DS that uses the same technology as Tablets to bring drawing to the portable level! Colors employs the sensitivity of the touch screen, allowing users to use the pressure of the stylus to create different stroke opacities. To be able to download the program you will need a homebrew enabled DS, aka a flash cart such as M3 simply and R4 Revolution. Given the program is MADE to be downloaded for free, it's a guilt free way to enjoy a DS flash cart.

Colors is a work in progress. As of the latest version, here is a list of the features, taken from the Colors website:

  • Hard and soft circular brush
  • Pressure-sensitivity can affect opacity and brush-size
  • 512x384 image resolution with 2 stage zoom
  • Replay the whole painting process of an image
  • Hue-circle and luminance and saturation-triangle style palette
  • Load and Save to memory card
  • Send painting as e-mail using Wi-Fi

Navie's Review:

Pros: I really like how I can now open my DS anywhere I go and doodle when I get the urge, and even have the ability to share it with people. Portable amusement has always been a big thing for me in owning a DS, and I find having a portable, digital sketchpad to be appealing and fun. Colors is super easy to use as well. It is and will continue to be steadily improved upon by the developers as well, so new features for Colors will be available in the future. You can playback your drawings to others and upload them to the internet.

Cons: There is no undo feature, and in order to fix an "oopsie" made while drawing you have to playback your progress, stop the playback before the mistake was made, and continue drawing from there. Also, basic tools from programs such as photoshop that we've all grown to love are not used, such as blur/smudge tools and the ability to work in layers. Requires $25-50 flash cart to use.

Score: 8 out of 10. In my opinion, its worth buying a flash cart in order to use.

Here is a video of the playback feature for Colors, showing someone doing quite the impressive doodle:
