My top 7 favorite controllers of all time.
7. Steel Battalion Command Center
Sometimes, gaming is just serious business. Such was the case with Steel Battalion, whose controller afforded you two control sticks, three pedals and some 40 odd buttons. The whole purpose of this extremely intricate setup was to immerse oneself with the complete control of a Vertical Tank, or mech robot. Every move was calculated, from a start up sequence to hitting the eject button at the last possible second. It's a real shame though, for 200 bucks you'd think they'd make a few more games that utilized this grand controller.
6. NES Zapper

The infamous light gun from 1984 Duck Hunt. I think the majority of gamers have fond memories pondering the technology of the time period... how DOES the NES know where I am pointing the gun??
5. NES Power Glove

Although the reliability of it's controls for most NES game were sketchy at best, the Power Glove was early Wii technology. Not to mention, fun to use! Plus, Jackey Vinson loved his, "It's so bad!"
4. Wiimote
>Versatility is the name of the game. It can be used to bowl, to swing a baseball bat, tennis racket, To wield a sword, to control your favorite characters, as a gun, and soon.. even as a lightsaber. Nothing more needs to be said, it's all about capturing the imagination.
3. GH Guitar

Simply put, nothing is cooler or more fun to play than the Guitar Hero guitar. And, until it's many imitators (cough, Rock Band), it was also one of a kind.
2. Xbox360

Sleek and sexy, the 360 controller is one of well thought out design. It fits comfortably in the curves of your hand, the joysticks are within comfortable distance of your thumbs (quite unlike the N64's joystick) and all the buttons are easily accessible for even the smallest hands. It's conveniently wireless, and also visually pleasing. You can't beat both style and substance.
1. NES Controller

I may get some disapproving head shakes to my number 1 choice, but classic is the way to go! The NES controller is where many of us began our life long journeys as gamers, and it provides that certain bit of nostalgia that comforting to go back to every now and again. It's a relic from a simpler time, when a gamer only needed a D pad and two buttons to execute every command in a game: from simple punches and kicks to the ever legendary Konami Code. This boxy, lightweight controller is and will always be my number 1.
Comments
360 controller is the best controller in my opinion because it fits into your hands easily and has the best layout etc as for the NES well its pretty crap but its a classic so everyboy loves it however my first controller was a orginial xbox duke controller
My 3 favorite controllers are (not in any specific order): SNES controller, 360 controller, and the Rock Band guitar (I hate Guitar Hero's guitar controller. It feels too stiff for me)
My first controller was a SMS controller. But i would have to say my fave is the Playstation 3 controller, i like the 360 one also.
what ni Dualshocks in there at all? that's totally bogus. I've loved that SONY controllers since the first one and they've only gotten better. & Power Glove belongs in the "Worst 7"
NES as #1?,. classic is one thing but replace the power glove with NES controller then put Dualshock3 as #1 then you got a winning list
and let not Forget the NES Advantage controller , the one with the big Stick and huge A and B buttons i had one it rocked.
and let not Forget the NES Advantage controller , the one with the big Stick and huge A and B buttons i had one it rocked.
The SNES controller rocked too
I agree, I enjoyed the SNES controller, but it really wasnt anything "too special" ya know? And thats coming from someone who loved the SNES.
If I had done a top 10 list, I wouldve added the NES advantage in there as well. but it doesnt make my top 7. Powerglove wasnt good for alot of things, but it was cool in the contex of its time.
And sorry Tparsons, dualshock? When I hear Dualshock or Sony or PLaystation, I automatically think "hmm.... mediocre library of non exclusives, a few racing games and sports games I have no interest in? No thank you!" Sony will never make my top anything. they epically fail at life.
Oh no Navie, Spiky, OrangeLambo, Dareal, God120, or Patron might've heard that. =(
Run while you still can.
Those are all great controllers. ^_^
You acidentally mixed up the number's 1 and 2 spots but we all make mistakes.;)
I really LOVE the japanese sega saturn controller for fighting games.....nothing is better then that controller for fighting.
looks like we have a fangirl in our presence. and thats funny cus sony made the ps2 and if im not mistaken has the best library of games of any console. stupid fangirl
I'm saddened to see the SNES and N64 controllers not up there. I think SNES set the precedent for the controller shape that we still use today for X360 and PS2/3. Also the N64 was the first with Analog control, which we could never play FPS games without! But to each their own of course.
Also, I'm not a sony fanboy (nintendo all the way) but you have to admit that PS had a few good exclusives, and even kicked off the Guitar Hero franchise
NES cotroller FTW, i totally like the xbox controller too, nice blog navie.
@Franthewaffleman: I don't think she was talking about the previous Sony systems, I think she is concentrating more on the PS3, which does have a lack of really good EXCLUSIVE titles. I <3 Sony but the only main reason to buy a PS3 right now is because of the Blu-Ray..which is sad because it has such potential if only they would develop more exclusive titles for it. But I am still waiting for Final Fantasy XIII and Kingdom Hearts 3...also waiting to hear how the new MGS is.
Hell yeah Navie , Sony sucks at video games!!!. Their tv's and other products aren't to bad though. The Sega Saturn ,Dreamcast, and Genesis controllers were pretty good to. The number one has to be the Atati Jaguar controller .
love the nes powaa glove!!
yes, calamity is right, I was referencing more the ps3. I mean, what did all those years of sony loyalty really get it's fans? An overpriced next gen whom game developers dont wanna touch with a ten foot poll due to the difficulty/expense of making blue ray games.
Gregggg, I thought hard on the dreamcast one, because I can remember the joy of putting the chois (spelling?) from sonic adventures onto the memory cards and caring for them like tamagotchis LOL.
Never thought I'd ever see the Power Glove on this list.
@Navie *choice. :)
and also i think that the reason that sony fans were loyal in the first place was because of the huge library and major exclusives of the PSOne and PS2, especially the PS2. I could also get into why I think the PS3 (and the DualShock) rocks but that's a discussion for another time :)
One thing that I find interesting about these comments is the lack of flaming. This is off-topic, I know, but it's funny that on this particular website people are much more civil. No offense to Navie, but what you said was slightly fangirlish. But the interesting thing is that anywhere else you would have gotten dozens of replies from angry PS3 supporters saying (in extremely poor english) how stupid you were and probably going on about those stupid "fagboys" and their "gaybox 360".
It's definitely nice to have this unusual reaction. And i think it's because you guys are all girls. Most guys on the internet just say whatever shit they want because they know that what they say doesn't affect them. But when there are actual *gasp* girls involved then they don't want to act like douches.
I know this was long and off-topic but i just wanted to get it out there.
360 controller is VERY comfortable. Much like the Dreamcast controller was.
I just can't get down with the DualShock from Sony.
The left analog is too far to the right. I get thumb cramps trying to reach it.
Power Glove was awful. Really, really awful.
i dont understand how dualshock is out of that list, and the snes controller i think was very important in the videogame history, i think it was the first one to have those buttons in the upper side of it.
And come on, where are the singstar microphones ????
Pedals lookin like Clutch Brake & Accelerator FTW! :D
We can't all be perfect @fade lol. I only played the game briefly during a time when the dude i was with let me touch the set up, once, and under supervision LOL.
ROFLMFAO..ive never seen a fangirl hate sony so much.. and yes banjo, I did see it.. You, my friend (Not banjo, Navie) are fucking stupid. Mediocre library??? Stupid, I tell you! And you cant say your not a fangirl because of your statment..
They expecially fail at life
Now thats just stupid.. I cant believe this..
Seriously. You wanna talk mediocre games, lets talk xbox360. They have Halo, and Gears to back them.. the rest is meh by far.
PS3 has, R2, K2, Uncharted, K1, LBP, FFXIII, Versus, Motorstorm2, Uncharted2, Heavenly Sword, God Of War 3 and some ive forgotten..
I do realize however Im going to get flamed for this because I just virtually bitch slapped you.
