Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots ... The Beginning

Jul. 11 12:50 AM by NuyoRiqueƱa

Before I go into my first impressions of this hellacious game, let me state for the record that beginning a game that is easily a hundred hour game during a move cross country while living out of hotels was not in any way shape or form the smartest decision I have ever made. First, I had trouble finding time to play and I would have withdrawals because I wanted to see what was going to happen next. The game sucks you in like an addicting soap opera. Second, did you know some televisions in hotels are bolted down and do not have the proper connections? Can someone please explain this phenomenon to me?

I must admit, please don't hate me, I had never played any of the Metal Gear Solid games before this one. I have a nephew, Alejandro, who is an amazing gamer and he loved the series. With all the hype surrounding the release of this highly anticipated game, and after much coaxing from Alejandro, I decided I was going to play the game. I put down my reservation at GameStop, if only to get the free DVD and waited. While I am admittedly not officially reviewing the DVD, I have to admit it was a great introduction to the game. It gave the entire backstory so I didn't feel so lost once the game was released. But this is not a review of the DVD so moving on.

When I decide to write about a game I always try to stay unbiased to what others have said or feel. I look for both the negative and positives of the game but let's be honest, how objective can you be if it is your opinion? My opinion is simple, the game really does live up to the hype. There is a reason people are still talking about, still playing and bragging about completing Metal Gear Solid 4. With that said, I am probably not the best gamer for the style of game play MGS seems to favor.

I have always been a kamikaze styled player. I prefer action, killing and, yes, dying. I want to learn the best ways to take down the enemy. This is due primarily to my lack of patience and patience is something you need to have a bit of to play this game. First, there is a great deal of storytelling in the game. It plays much like a movie and yet it is incredibly interesting so you find that you don't mind that you haven't played for nearly 10 minutes. Also interesting is the flashbacks. In the game, at various points, the X will appear in the top of your screen and if you press it (press multiple times) you will see flashbacks as they pertain to the storyline. After a lengthy but, I reiterate, well-told introduction I get to move - but, not for long. There are massive robot-looking creatures and enemies everywhere. Okay so Otacon explains things as you go along and quickly find that you are smack dab in the middle of a war and neither side is friend or foe. I abruptly find out exactly what this means in terms of game play - both sides will kill you! Here is where your patience kicks into high gear. You have to be stealthy and make use of your camouflage gear. Literally. If you stay still long enough, your uniform blends in, in a chameleon-like fashion. Problem; Solid Snake is now Old Snake, too much squatting around and you physically stress him out. You have to maneuver around battles and people unseen to get to your rendezvous points. Ugh! I am not good at this at all. Needless to say, I die, a lot. But it does not deter me from wanting to play.

I find that while I love some games because they are easy or quick achievement points, the ones I talk about most are the challenging ones. I love my robot sidekick the Mark II who is there to help me with the exchanging of the ID weaponry, specifically locked for use with only certain people, and more. That's where the crazy, Wesley Snipes looking Drebin and his crazy monkey come in. He launders the weapons so I can use all the weapons I pick up.

As the game goes on, and I die more and more, I am introduced to more characters who are reminiscent of the previous installments, such as Raiden and Naomi. While these characters are new to me, I don't feel like I missed something by not having played the previous games. Between the dialogue and intricacies of the game, you are too caught up in the mission and story to care. In my research I found that Hideo Kojima put a lot of himself into this game and it shows.

I still have a ways to go in the game and it could easily turn into a 300 hour game given the way I play but I have to admit I always looking forward to playing. I mention the story a few times because I think it is what makes the game so powerful. Add in the amazing graphics, the fun gadgets and even the humor (there is a very crude part where Snake obtains an old oil drum after a man has been caught hiding in it while relieving himself, and there is plenty of violent flatulence).

I do not want to give away too much because I really want people to experience it for themselves. I guess you could look it up but what's the fun in that?! I will have to let you know the rest goes but only after I am completely done and with a spoiler disclaimer, of course. I cannot wait to see how it all ends.

Thank you!! A ACTUAL REVIEW. Your gonna love the game so much and you will get emotional. Theres tons of easter eggs in this game and you'll have so much fun finding them. Theres downloads for the game for new otacams and ipod music(ipod is fun to listen to and they have a lot of great tacks)I've beaten the game more then 3 times and I had fun every time. I played it so many ways (assassins creed outfit,or using stealth camo, or corpse camo) and unlock so many items from this game and when I get to the end I always watch every minute of it.

Maybe you wont get as emotional because you haven't played the other MGS, but it is still a great experience from a game that I think everyone can relate to. You can appreciate the love, care and hard work that was put so much into this game. Its well worth the 60 bucks and has great replay value(metal gear online)

Thanks so much for reviewing this game !!

yay for nuyo :) mgs is an awesome game, my main attraction is the story, is an epic story, is better if played from the beginning, the badguys are the bomb, especially psycho mantis and vulcan raven from mgs1, i love the stages, the story, the bosses, the weapons, the gameplay. nice blog nuyo.

Nice review Nuyo :D very well reviewed ^^
Lets not start this "ACTUAL REVIEW" stuff though, we really don't need that.
Thanks again Nuyo :D

Is it just me, or do the reviews on this site sound 'real'? They don't sound like the game maker gave them a list of what to put down. I mean I've never read a review of a game that wasn't even finished by the reviewer...cool. "Stay tuned...same Bat channel,..." Good job, Riquena. AND while on the move. Xtra credit for you. Toma!

Girl you need to play those other games. They are CLASSICS! I have yet to play this one but that will be rectified soon. Good job on the review though. It really does make me want to play it sooner.

Thanks for all the support!

Besos para todos!

Thanks for the beginning review NuyoRiquena! I haven't been playing MGS4 as much as I should and after reading this review, I want to go home and play it right now!
I would love to see a box set or one game with all the previous games on it, or something like that. I would buy that in a heart beat!

@ totcm I believe they do have a box set out it's called Metal Gear Solid: The Essentials Collection. It has MGS 1,2 and 3 inside and it only costs $30.

@QOTPA_Kenny

we did need this actual review because it proves something. It shows that shes not half assin the game like some reviewers that just play the game for a bit then give their score.

Tru dat, CQC_NastyN8. True story.

CQC - I said it was a good review! I enjoyed it! :D Just like I enjoy everything on gamegirl! i think you maybe missed my point, but that's ok :D It's a cool review on on that we both agree ^^

I didn't like the review; sounded like an xbot reviewing the greatest game ever and not making it out to be what it is.________ Just kidding!!!! Nice review!

Wow, great job Nuyo! Very nice first impressions/beginning review. =)

Hi, Nuyoriquena, excuse me my bad English(soy boricua)but I'll try. I liked your review. Metal Gear is a revolutionary title since it's debut in 1987. I have been a fan of Metal Gear since 1987. Try to play the other games of the series and probably you will be a fan like you nephew. :)

*cries*
Why? why?
why i don't own a ps3

i never felt like i had to play a game as I do feel about MGS4, cmon i played all mgs and i can't see the end for it
WHYYYYYYYY
Sony i curse the day you decided to make MGS4 a ps3 only

I promise...as soon as I am done, I will do a follow up! :)

I firmly believe that this game is probably the best game released in a VERY long time, and I don't think anything better than it will be released for a very long time. I found quite possibly everything about the game to be perfect. I am probably biased because I am a HUGE Metal Gear fan and have an almost stalker-ish love for Solid Snake. Like seriously, if he was real, I would be stalking him right now. ANYWAYS, this game made me laugh, it made me yell out loud, and it definitely made me cry more than once.

It has one of the most compelling story lines I have ever seen, and my heart literally broke during some of the scenes. I feel bad for people that have not had the privilege to play this game.

You're review was quite good. It's definitely would make me interested in the game if I hadn't already been completely obsessed with it lol

I loved the game ALOT...and i loved the miniserires in between even though they were long, but it didnt bother me...what bothered me was when i was done with the game i felt like i havent played at all....its a great game but not alot of gameplay. i mean i finished the game in 3 days and i was left wanting MORE. the flashbacks r cool but sometimes they would distract me while the characters were talking, coz i would be so focused on what im looking at and it making so much noise while i press X that i wouldnt be able to hear what some characters would be saying.

I got so emotional towards the end, i even cried with the otacon and naomi scene (trying not to ruin it for those who havent played it yet)and i also cried for Raiden when he came to the rescue...oohh i love raiden, he so HOT. Vamp is HOT too in a dirty/devilish/vampirish way too..heh

It has alot of humor, specially when psycho mantis is up and he talks about sony joystick..HILARIOUS

and NUYO, i know what you mean by being impatient, im like that too but this game taught me to lower my heart rate and blood pressure hehe. I learned patience, sometimes i would lie dead for a while or crawl really slow to get to a spot, thats how patient ive become.

Thanx for the review:) keep it up
